Our Community - Needs, Jobs, Tools provides Grade 3 students with perspective on the importance and impact of business in shaping our lives. Students actively define the cornerstones of a strong society and learn about their role in its growth and prosperity.
Get Back to Their Roots
Demonstrate the value of skills, money and resources by exploring various family and economic situations. Needs, Jobs, Tools gives students a first-hand look at how they can become better prepared for business and make a positive impact in their community. Ensure future success builds upon a solid foundation of home-grown knowledge and skills.
The Four Modules of Needs, Jobs, Tools are:
Needs of Our Community - Students get to know their volunteer and during this lesson discuss what needs are, and how jobs help people satisfy family and community needs.
Jobs In Our Community - In this lesson students will use family surveys to list and group various jobs and link them to needs. They will act out a number of common jobs and talk about them.
The Money Circle - Students discuss what it means to get paid for work and role play exchanging money for work and for retail purchases. They will discover that money flows through the community through various exchanges.
Tools and Technology - Students discuss what job tools are and describe tools that members of their family use in their jobs. They will draw people using tools in their jobs, and make a mural illustrating a range of tools being used.
The Goals of this Program:
1) To increase students' awareness of the variety of jobs in our community.
2) To provide a better understanding of how jobs satisfy the needs of people living in our community.
3) To provide a better understanding of the flow of money between households and businesses in our community.
4) to increase students' awareness of the types of tools necessary to perform different jobs in our community.
Time Commitment:4 - 1 hour sessions plus a 2 hour training session.
