Program Length: 22 Weeks
This Unique Program gives students the opportunity to acquire basic business knowledge, relevant work experience & to develop interpersonal skills in a unique learning environment.
In accepting the challenge & responsibility of operating their own business, participants will discover the rewards of teamwork, commitment & individual initiative. Individual & collective efforts are recognized & rewarded.
For the Participant Management team, the opportunity exists to experiment with new management techniques & approaches to motivation.
Guided by business consultants, the young people meet after school one night a week over a 22 week period. Every aspect of owning & operating a business is covered: developing a business plan, organizing, managing & liquidating a company.
Goals of Company Program-A Student Venture are to:
1) Provide an experiential supplement to business and economic education of students to help them better understand how businesses are organized and operated.
2) Help students develop critical thinking, speaking, and leadership skills.
3) Demonstrate the rewards of the free enterprise system.
4) Introduce to career opportunities and teach basic workforce-readiness skills.
5) Foster a positive relationship between our youth and the business community.
Students will:
- Learn how to raise capital by selling shares of stocks.
- Prepare a business plan and financial statement.
- Declare and distribute dividends and issue a report to shareholders.
- Produce the product or service.
- Develop marketing and sales strategies.
- Liquidate the company and close the books.
Through this programs students also have the opportunity to work towards awards and local/national bursaries as well as earn the opportunity to attend our CANJAC conference.
Volunteer Time Commitment for this Program: 2.5 hours a week for 22 weeks plus 6 hours of training.
