JA Dollars with Sense is an interactive program designed to encourage grade 7 students to develop the financial literacy necessary to make informed decisions about their financial futures. Students learn about budgeting, money management and investments. Dollars with Sense is made available to students through the cooperative efforts of businesses and schools. The program is delivered through four lessons and with the help of two business volunteers, students learn the importance of investing in themselves.
The Four Modules in this Program are:
Let's Talk Money - Students learn about money as a means of exchange and compare a variety of personal banking options. Be a SMART Spender - Students identify sources of shopping information, identify advertising techniques and use them to promote a product.
Looking After Your Money - Students describe why budgets are important, prepare a budget and examine the impact of compound interest.
Making Your Money Work - Students learn different ways to invest money, investment terminology and advantages and disadvantages of various investment techniques.
Time to Invest - Students have the opportunity to put the lessons into action. In a low risk, fun game, students are given hands on experience.
Volunteer Time Commitment: 1 full day or 2 half day sessions with 2 hours of training.
